6 Minute Read:
Motherhood is one of the most remarkable and beautiful gifts that a woman can experience in her life. With a child comes joy and love that cannot be matched. However, along with the positives, the childbearing process can take a major toll on a woman’s body, especially on her breasts and abdomen.
While some of these changes can resolve on their own, others don’t and can remain that way forever, if untreated.
The good news, though, is that plastic surgery can help moms regain their pre-baby body so that they can feel confident and comfortable as they push their stroller at the park or have pool play days in the water.

There are many different cosmetic surgery procedures that can help you achieve a hot-mom bod just like some of your favorite celebrities.
Below, you’ll find information on some of the most popular and effective postpartum plastic surgery procedures.
If you feel like you may be a candidate for any of these procedures, make sure to schedule a consultation.
1. Breast Augmentation
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, your breasts grow in size to allow for your milk to come in. However, after you are finished breastfeeding your baby, your breasts return to their pre-pregnancy size, and sometimes even get smaller.
Additionally, another concern that moms have after childbirth is breast asymmetry, with one breast being a different size than the other.
Breast augmentation surgery increases the size and improves the shape and volume of your breasts with the use of breast implants (saline implants or silicone implants).
At your consultation, Dr. Andreasen will go over your implant options to help you choose the best implant size and type for your body and lifestyle. Along with a larger, fuller size, any asymmetry can be corrected with breast implants.

2. Breast Lift
Following pregnancy and childbirth, many women notice that their once perky breasts now sag in an unattractive manner. This sagging is due to the fact that the tissues and ligaments in your breasts were stretched while your breasts grew larger with milk.
Once you finish breastfeeding, the size of the breasts lessens, but the tissues and ligaments are stretched so far that they cannot return to their previous state.
Breast lift surgery (mastopexy) is a cosmetic surgery that lifts your breasts to a higher position so that you can feel comfortable and confident with your youthful breasts.
For this procedure, Dr. Andreasen will remove some of the underlying breast tissue that is causing the sagging, and he will reposition the remaining tissue to allow for a more natural appearance to your breasts. Additionally, if you struggle with downward facing nipples, a breast lift can allow your nipples to be repositioned to a more youthful and natural height.
3. Breast Lift With Augmentation
For the most comprehensive and dynamic breast transformation, breast lift surgery with augmentation (also known as a mastopexy augmentation) allows for your breasts to be lifted to a higher, more youthful and perky position while also having the size and volume of your breasts increased with the use of implants.
After your breast lift with augmentation, you will hopefully feel more confident in your appearance, knowing that you are turning heads for all the right reasons.

4. Liposuction
Liposuction surgery is one of the most trusted and effective cosmetic procedures available.
With liposuction, pockets of stubborn, subcutaneous fat are removed. This fat is essentially vacuumed out of your body through a cannula, which is a thin tube that is inserted through small incisions in the target area(s). Once the fat is removed, those removed fat cells are gone for good, leaving you with a thinner, more toned appearance that you will feel comfortable having.

5. Tummy Tuck
One of the most common complaints from new moms about their bodies is sagging skin in their midsection. This makes sense, since that is the part of your body that your baby called home for nine-plus months.
Stubborn fat and sagging belly skin can cause many moms to feel self-conscious about the way they look.
Luckily, tummy tuck surgery (also known as abdominoplasty) removes pockets of abdominal fat, tightens underlying abdominal muscles (which often separate during pregnancy and childbirth), removes excess and sagging skin around the abdomen, and tightens the remaining skin to allow for a sleeker and better contoured midsection.
After tummy tuck surgery, it may even be impossible to tell that you were pregnant at all!

6. Bra Fat Roll Removal
Many women experience excess skin and fat bulging out from their bras along their back and sides. This can be embarrassing for some women and can be a result of the increased breast size during pregnancy.
However, this bra fat roll can be reduced through the use of liposuction in these target areas. For women needing more extensive correction, including women with less skin elasticity, skin excision may be necessary in addition to liposuction.
With skin excision, excess skin is removed so that you can have a smoother and flatter appearance along your bra line in your back and sides.
7. Mommy Makeover
One of the most transformative procedures for women after they are finished with having children is Mommy Makeover surgery.
A Mommy Makeover is not a single procedure; instead, it is a customizable combination of procedures that can include any and all of the procedures listed above (breast surgery, tummy tuck, and liposuction).
A few of the benefits of Mommy Makeover surgery include:
- Less overall cost
- Less overall recovery time (since you are having and recovering from the procedures at the same time)
- More dramatic results.
At your consultation, you will be able to discuss your aesthetic goals with your plastic surgeon to see if a Mommy Makeover is the right choice for you.

Something to Keep in Mind
Ideally, you should undergo postpartum procedures, especially tummy tuck and Mommy Makeover surgeries, only when you are finished having children.
If you have these surgeries and then become pregnant again, then the pregnancy and childbirth may erase some of the cosmetic corrections made.

Deflated breasts, stubborn fat, and abdominal skin laxity are just some of the after-effects of pregnancy.
While many women succeed in toning their post-pregnancy body, others may not be so lucky regardless of how much they exercise. Fortunately, Mommy Makeover surgery uses various procedures that can be combined to provide you with the results you desire.

What Makes Me a Good Candidate?
Mommy Makeover surgery typically addresses the breasts and abdomen, which are the areas most affected by pregnancy. While some women look into this procedure to enhance their sagging or deflated breasts, others wish to treat their stomach pooch and weak abdominal muscles.
Choosing to undergo Mommy Makeover surgery is a personal decision that should not be made lightly. The details of this treatment are based on the effects that childbirth and pregnancy have had on the patient’s body as well as their aesthetic desires.
If you are interested in undergoing a Mommy Makeover, you must be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about your results. Your age is a large determining factor in deciding if you are a good candidate for some or all parts of a Mommy Makeover.
What Are My Procedure Options?
Once you have decided to undergo Mommy Makeover surgery, you will schedule a consultation with your surgeon. Both you and your surgeon will discuss any questions or concerns you may have regarding your procedure.
After a thorough examination of your body, your surgeon will determine which procedures will best suit your needs. The options include:
What Should I Know Before My Surgery?
Factors such as surgical risks and benefits will depend on the procedures being performed during your Mommy Makeover. You will want to discuss your specific surgical plan with your surgeon to hear all of the details of your procedures, what to expect before, during, and after treatment, and what the anticipated cost will be.
Recovery usually includes some soreness and downtime. If a patient has a sitting job, they may be able to go back to work after one week, as long as heavy activity is avoided for a month. Swelling may take three to six months to subside, depending on the patient.
If a combination of surgical procedures cannot be completed at one time, then they can be performed separately to ensure you regain the figure you once had.

Your body goes through dramatic changes during pregnancy. Your belly and breasts may have lost their youthful firmness and tone in the months or years after giving birth, and these changes may have left you feeling self-conscious. Since many of the changes that occur during pregnancy cannot be corrected through diet and exercise, you may feel stuck with your new body. Luckily, post-pregnancy plastic surgery can help you regain your original physique and confidence.
Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation uses implants to increase the size and improve the shape of your breasts. You will have a choice between silicone and saline implants as well as between submuscular and subglandular implant placement to meet your aesthetic goals. You can work with Dr. Andreasen to create a customized breast augmentation that enhances your body and complements your curves.
Ideal Treatment for: Breast Volume Loss
Losing volume in the breasts is common after nursing or after the pregnancy itself. You may feel that your breasts are smaller than before you became pregnant, or you may want to regain the fuller breasts you had during your pregnancy.
Breast Lift
Breast lift surgery is designed to treat laxity of the breasts. Dr. Andreasen repositions sagging tissue and uses internal sutures to provide additional support. Nipple-areola resizing and repositioning is also common during a breast lift to achieve a more beautifully natural and proportional breast appearance.
Ideal Treatment for: Breast Sagging or Drooping
Rapid breast growth that occurs during pregnancy can weaken breast tissue. Breast lift surgery should be considered if your lower breast tissue sits at or below the inframammary line.
Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck involves creating an incision low in the pubic area to remove excess skin and tighten the abdominal muscles. A corset technique helps restore firmness to compromised muscles, while skin removal and contouring enhance the abdominal area.
Ideal Treatment for: The Post-pregnancy Pooch
Muscle separation and excess skin can cause your belly to appear weak and protruding. A tummy tuck addresses both issues and restores the more toned look you had before your baby.
Liposuction
Liposuction uses a small, well-placed incision to suction out unwanted fat. When performed by a skilled surgeon, liposuction can help define and contour a specific area of your body. Fat removal not only leaves you feeling slimmer, but it also enhances your overall shape.
Ideal Treatment for: Stubborn Deposits of Fat
While beneficial to use along the abdomen, liposuction can significantly enhance the hips, thighs, arms, back, and neck by eliminating stubborn fat that is resistant to diet and exercise.
Often, we see women in our practice who are looking for a Mommy Makeover following the birth of one or several kids. Most are unhappy with the deflated appearance of their breasts and are dissatisfied that they can’t achieve a toned tummy look. As the leading breast and body surgeon in the Inland Empire, Dr. Andreasen creates tailored Mommy Makeover plans that restore attractive contours of your body.
However, as excited as many women are to undergo their Mommy Makeover, just as many are worried about the recovery period—they are still moms after all. Life doesn’t stop if you decide to undergo surgery, but that shouldn’t prevent you from looking and feeling fantastic. This recovery timeline will help you better plan following your Mommy Makeover to ensure a smoother transition into your normal life.
Recovery for Breast Procedures
Luckily, breast and abdominal procedures heal at similar rates. The difference is where you experience discomfort and the type of activities you are limited in performing. After your breast augmentation, you will feel a tight soreness across the chest. You may feel groggy for 24 to 48 hours from your anesthesia and should have someone else take care of young children during this time.
Most women begin to feel a reduction in pain after four days, at which time they can resume light activities around the house. You can return to work within two weeks but should avoid any heavy lifting for up to four weeks. Dr. Andreasen typically releases patients back to their regular physical activities after this time.
Recovery for Tummy Tuck
Having a tummy tuck still sets you on a similar recovery timeline as a breast augmentation, this is one reason why we can easily combine the procedures. The location of your discomfort will be different, with tightness across the abdomen. You will be required to wear a compression garment for the entirety of your recovery.
It is imperative that you limit the amount of strain you place on the abdominal muscles following a tummy tuck. You are more likely to develop seromas if you undergo intense physical activities too early. Dr. Andreasen usually allows patients to resume their regular exercise plans after four weeks.
Recovery for Liposuction
Liposuction typically has a shorter recovery period than other breast and body procedures. Since it is commonly used for abdominal and hip enhancement and improving the contour of your body, it is unlikely to cause additional discomfort. It is necessary for both liposuction and tummy tuck procedures that you wear your compression garment until Dr. Andreasen says it’s ok to stop. Compression garments help reduce postoperative swelling and promote tissue contraction, allowing your results to look better.
Tips to Help You Through Your Recovery
- Make sure someone is available to care for you and your children within the first 48 hours. You may need help walking throughout the house and replacing bandages. You will not be able to drive, so someone should be on hand in case an emergency arises.
- Pre-plan your resting area. If you live in a two-story house, we recommend setting up a comfortable spot downstairs with easy access to a restroom. Fill your medications beforehand and have a written schedule of when you need to take pain medications and antibiotics.
- Drink plenty of fluids—anesthesia can leave you feeling dehydrated. It is also necessary to keep up healthy nutrition to provide your body with the essentials it needs to heal itself.
- Plan for your children to carpool with other parents if your spouse is unable to drive them around. Within the first four to seven days, pain medication will prevent you from being able to operate a car.
