Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation in Redlands?

Also known as augmentation mammaplasty, breast augmentation involves the surgical insertion of breast implants to create fuller, firmer breasts.

You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation if:

  • You are an adult in good overall health
  • You are not planning on becoming pregnant
  • You are unhappy with the size and/or shape of your breasts
  • Your breasts have lost shape and volume following significant weight loss, pregnancy, or menopause
  • You would like to have full, well-developed breasts
  • You have a realistic understanding of the probable outcomes and potential risks involved with cosmetic surgery

How Is Breast Augmentation Performed?

There are a number of surgical techniques used to perform breast augmentation. In Redlands, augmentation mammaplasty is done under general anesthesia, and for most patients, the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis.

The surgery involves tiny incisions either on (around the areola), below (along the inframammary fold), or within the underarm (transaxillary), depending on the size of the breast and the type of implant being used. Once the incisions are made, Dr. Andreasen will carefully place the implant under the pectoral muscle, between the breast tissue and the pectoral muscle, or partially under the pectoral muscles.

To complete the procedure, the surgeon closes the incisions using a variety of techniques such as surgical tape, surgical staples, and/or sutures in a way that is designed to minimize scarring.

What Is Breast Augmentation Recovery Like?

During the recovery period, the breasts are wrapped with surgical dressings and a specialized post-op bra or elastic bandages. This helps to promote healing, reduce swelling, and prevent infection at the surgical site.

Patients may experience some minor discomfort that can usually be managed using over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications; alternatively, some patients may be prescribed post-operative pain medications.

In general, breast augmentation patients should plan on avoiding high-impact activities for a few weeks after the procedure.

What Results Can I Expect From Breast Augmentation?

As with all types of cosmetic surgery, breast augmentation results vary depending on the age, health, skin elasticity, and genetic makeup of each patient.

Regardless of the surgical technique used, breasts will be larger and firmer immediately following the surgery. In order to achieve the best possible long-term outcomes, patients need to comply with all post-operative instructions, maintain a healthy weight, and attend any follow-up visits.

Pregnancy, hormonal changes, age, and significant weight loss or gain can alter the outcomes of breast augmentation surgery, and, in some cases, surgical revision is required to maintain the initial surgical outcomes.
