Liposuction is a body contouring procedure designed to remove fatty tissue through tiny “stab” incisions using suction tubes called cannulas. With all liposuction techniques, fat is permanently removed through these small incisions placed near the treated area. After the fat is removed, the skin has a remarkable ability to shrink back down to the newly contoured area. In thinner-skinned individuals, this ability may be diminished slightly due to the nature of the skin. Adjunctive treatment modalities such as ultrasound and laser have been designed to help promote this skin shrinkage and to facilitate increased fat removal.

Liposuction can be performed almost anywhere on the body. From the neck to the ankles, unwanted collections of fatty tissue can be suctioned leaving minimal scars. Postoperatively, patients are placed in compressive garments, sleeves, or vests to assist with control of swelling and to improve contour. Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction can be used to treat more stubborn areas of fat like the male chest, male love handles, or areas that have been previously treated.

Areas with the thickest skin respond the best to liposuction treatment. Inland Empire liposuction surgeon Dr. Andreasen has had great success treating the rolls that appear on the back with this procedure. Since the skin is usually quite thick in the back, aggressive liposuction can smooth these rolls and avoid any significant back scarring. The love handle areas also respond well to liposuction and can be treated at the same time as tummy tuck or breast procedures.

Recovery from liposuction surgery is typically on the order of days. Although patients may feel a little “beat up” after a liposuction surgery, they can return to work wearing their compression garments under their regular clothes. Return to full, normal pre-operative activity may require 3-4 weeks. The final results from liposuction procedures may not be completely visible for 3-6 months.
